The large increase in deaths by overdose and potential underlying suicidal intent in such deaths suggest the importance of understanding trends of suicidal ideation in people with opioid use disorder (OUD). This study used National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) data to examine trends in suicidal ideation (SI) between 2009 and 2020 among adults aged 18 or older with OUD. In that time frame, the prevalence of individuals with OUD who reported SI increased significantly from 22.8% to 29.8%. The subgroups with the most significant changes included young adults, females, non-Hispanic whites, working full-time, individuals with Medicaid, living in large metropolitan areas, and having another SUD.
