The Injury and Violence Prevention Branch of the Division of Public Health (IVPB) recently posted an update of suspected overdose deaths, fentanyl-positive deaths, and provisional data on ED visits for overdose reports.
Suspected Overdose Deaths
There were 303 suspected overdose deaths in December 2023 compared to 330 in December 2022.
Fentanyl-Positive Deaths
There were 243 fentanyl-positive deaths in October 2023 compared to 275 in October 2022. Please note that due to the time needed to finalize toxicology results, this report is two months behind the other reports shared in this update. These data should still be considered provisional and likely to change; low numbers may be due to a delay rather than a decrease in deaths.
Overdose Involving Medication or Drugs with Dependency Potential
There were 1,127 overdose ED visits in December 2023 involving medication or drugs with dependency potential compared to 1,419 this time last year (December 2022).
