The Injury and Violence Prevention Branch of the Division of Public Health (IVPB) recently posted an update of suspected overdose deaths, fentanyl-positive deaths, and provisional data on Emergency Department (ED) visits for overdose reports.

The IVPB also recently launched a new overdose page that streamlines their monthly reports and annual updates of other key metrics. The new site can be found here: North Carolina Overdose Epidemic Data.

Suspected Overdose Deaths

There were 270 suspected overdose deaths in March 2025 compared to 267 in March 2024.

Fentanyl-Positive Deaths

There were 123 fentanyl-positive deaths in January 2025 compared to 223 in January 2024. Please note that due to the time needed to finalize toxicology results, this report is three months behind the other reports shared in this update.

Overdose Involving Medication or Drugs with Dependency Potential

There were 954 overdose ED visits in March 2025 involving medication or drugs with dependency potential compared to 1,082 in March 2024.
