Improving MOUD Access: What Pharmacists Need to Know About the PhARM-OUD Guideline

The Pharmacy Access to Resources and Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (PhARM-OUD) Guideline is a Joint Consensus Practice Guideline developed by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy and the National Community Pharmacists Association. This comprehensive resource offers a set of recommendations aimed at expanding patient access to buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD).

Endorsed by leading professional and advocacy organizations—including the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the American Pharmacists Association, and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists—the guideline equips pharmacists with critical tools to improve patient care and ensure buprenorphine is available in community pharmacy settings.

The PhARM-OUD guideline is designed to educate pharmacists on the significance of their role in increasing access to buprenorphine, while also guiding them through the regulatory and clinical challenges that can act as barriers. It offers practical support for dispensing decisions that promote high-quality care for individuals prescribed buprenorphine. Additionally, the guidance encourages expanded use of telehealth, improved access to monoproduct formulations, and strategies to address and reduce stigma surrounding OUD treatment.
