Overdose deaths continue to skyrocket in the U.S. and, while opioids are involved in most overdoses, other substances are often involved. In this study, the authors examine overdose records in Maryland to assess the substance involved. While fentanyl was involved in the most overdoses, polysubstance use was found in most deaths. The most frequent patterns of polysubstance use were fentanyl/heroin/cocaine, fentanyl/alcohol and prescription opioids/benzodiazepines/ antidepressants. Patterns of overdose substance use did vary by demographics and location.
