Updated NC Overdose Surveillance Reports – December 2024

The Injury and Violence Prevention Branch of the Division of Public Health (IVPB) recently posted an update of suspected overdose deaths, fentanyl-positive deaths, and provisional data on Emergency Department (ED) visits for overdose reports.

The IVPB recently launched a new overdose page that streamlines their monthly reports and annual updates of other key metrics. The new site can be found here: North Carolina Overdose Epidemic Data.

Suspected Overdose Deaths

There were 220 suspected overdose deaths in December 2024 compared to 303 in December 2023.

Fentanyl-Positive Deaths

There were 140 fentanyl-positive deaths in October 2024 compared to 276 in October 2023. Please note that due to the time needed to finalize toxicology results, this report is three months behind the other reports shared in this update.

Overdose Involving Medication or Drugs with Dependency Potential

There were 830 overdose ED visits in December 2024 involving medication or drugs with dependency potential compared to 1,230 in December 2023.
